However, simply stuffing loose filter pads or biological rings into your canister or hang-on-back filter without a clear strategy can drastically restrict water flow, accelerate bypass clogging, and starve beneficial bacteria of essential oxygen.

1. Stage One: Mechanical Filtration (Debris Trapping)

The incoming water flowing directly from your tank intake carries raw organic debris, leftover fish food, and detached plant leaves.

  • The Goal: Trap solid waste before it reaches your porous bio-media where it would otherwise clog micro-pores and smother beneficial bacteria.
